Running Gear Wish List

17 Jan

After reading Peanut Butter Finger’s post about her favorite workout gear, I started thinking about items that I would like to add to my arsenal of running gear. Don’t get my wrong…I love going out for a run without my iPhone and just listening to the sounds around me and concentrating on my breathing but having some new gear can definitely spice up a run. Here’s a list of some of the items I’ve been eyeing lately and may be adding to my closet before I gear up (fingers crossed) for my first half marathon this summer!

Snow Day

16 Jan

Good morning everyone! I hope your Wednesday is going well! It was a snowy morning here in Massachusetts which made it hard to get out of bed but I wanted to get to the gym early….plus, I needed to work up the energy to clean off my car. Once that was done, I drove over to PF. Thankfully, even though the roads were bad, school was cancelled so town was quiet.

Drink Up!

9 Jan

Happy Wednesday everyone! I hope you’re all having a great day!  Today started out with a quick breakfast of banana yogurt with oats before tackling a long to do list which I got halfway through before deciding it was time to take a gym break.

Workout

As was scheduled in my Slim and Sculpt program, I had an interval day which consisted of one minute of running followed by a minute of fast walking for a total of fifteen minutes. It was definitely a harder workout than I expected when I was first reviewing it. The speeds were definitely a bit higher than I usually run when I do a distance run and the walking portions were still at 4.5 mph which kept my heart rate up. Thankfully, one of my favorite running songs came on near the end of my run to get me through the last few intervals.

I was certainly a hot mess once I got off the treadmill but I felt accomplished. I followed up my run with a quick ab workout and a BIG bottle of water in keeping with my resolution to drink more water. Speaking of which… Continue reading

Pumpkin Banana Yogurt

6 Jan

Hey there! I hope you’re all having a wonderful Sunday so far! After getting up a bit later than I had planned, Dad and I headed over to Barnes and Noble to grab some coffees and catchup in the cafe like we do most weekend mornings. I wasn’t hungry for breakfast yet so instead, I opted for some unsalted almonds and a green tea which was AMAZING. It had coconut, ginger and lemon flavors in it which at first made me a bit hesitant to try it but I was sold after my first taste. Absolutely amazing.

After running a few errands to the grocery store, pharmacy and Target, we made it back to the house where my hunger finally set in. I was craving something sweet so I whipped up one of my favorite snacks from college…Pumpkin Banana Yogurt! I use to bring with me to my morning Astronomy class. I even had my professor ask what it was because he could smell it from the front of the class one morning. It super simple to whip up and filling once you add in some oats or granola.

After mushing up a whole banana, I add some vanilla yogurt, which this morning happened to be a Light Activia that was left in the fridge and add some pumpkin spice. Don’t have pumpkin spice? Chances are you have all the stuff to make it….I use to use this recipe before I ended up just buying some. Add as much as you want, toss in some granola or rolled oats (my preference) and you’re good to go! Hope you guys enjoy and have a wonderful rest of the day! I am off to the gym to fit in a bit of cardio before I start some hardcore cleaning!

Cousins Shopping Day

4 Jan

Let me start this post by saying if you haven’t been to a Disney Store, please do yourself a favor and go. The minute you walk into the store you can’t help but smile and your day just seems a bit better…or at least that’s how I felt yesterday after my first visit. After getting a few gift cards at our family Christmas party, my cousin and I set out to the mall to pick up some new things. Although we didn’t have much luck with the shopping, we mad a point to stop at the Disney Store before leaving. My heart INSTANTLY melted. I felt like a little kid again. I was instantly drawn to all the Monsters, Inc. stuff because it is one of my favorite movies. I mean, how cute is this coffee mug?

Lunch

It was hard to stop myself from spending money. After wandering around for a bit and finding more things that I will be adding to my Christmas and birthday lists next year, we stopped by a Chinese food place for a late lunch. We were absolutely famished by the time we arrived and as always, the food hit the spot. We both decided to order the beef and broccoli which was delicious.

We hit a few more stops before both heading home to take much needed naps.

Workout

My workout for the night was a bit frustrating if I do say so myself. Although I like the gym that I go to, it’s on the smaller side so with all of the people who joined for part of their New Year Resolutions, it’s a tight squeeze. Thankfully, my workout was rather short. It was also the start of my second week of the Slim and Sculpt Program (mentioned here). After a quick five minute warm up on the treadmill, I hit the weights doing squats, dead lifts,  bench presses and rows leaving me VERY sore, but feeling accomplished this morning! Hopefully this second week of the program will be even better than last week!

Hope you all have a great morning! Look out for another post later on today!

Happy Election Day!

6 Nov

I hope everyone who had the opportunity to get out and vote today took advantage! It’s such an amazing freedom and I was so excited to vote for the first time….although I had already voted four weeks ago! I had to absentee vote because I am in Louisiana and can’t possibly make it home to Massachusetts on election day. I was pretty sad that I didn’t get a sticker because of my early voting but I’m sure I’ll get one next election! As for right now, I am just watching the numbers come in on TV with friends and catching up on a bit of homework. It’s a bit crazy trying to focus on both politics and Astronomy!

As for the rest of my day, it was pretty uneventful. I am coming down with another cold so I skipped the gym and instead took a nice long walk around the lake. It was a cool day in Baton Rouge which made it an absolutely amazing walk. After I returned from my 4.2 mile walk, I did a few planks and crunches before prepping dinner. I made a romaine salad with a Boca Chik’n Patty, red bell peppers, onions and yummy Russian dressing. Yum yum!

Well I hope you all have a wonderful night and an exciting rest of the week!

Back to the Grind

1 Nov

I’ve been lacking a lot of workout posts lately (or I guess any posts for that matter) but this semester has been kicking my butt. I can’t wait until Thanksgiving and Christmas break to get a chance to sit down and catch up on posts!

As for my workout today, I felt pretty unmotivated until I got to the gym at which point I wanted to do everything. I lost track of time quickly which I find is amazing because it makes workouts fly by. I started out with an awesome “shredmill” workout that I found somewhere on the web. I wish I could remember where I found it because this is one of my favorite workouts lately. It’s long but like I said, time flies when you doing it because of the constant changes with speed and incline.

Get ready to break a serious sweat!

This one definitely had me breaking a sweat and I was pumped up for some supersets when I got off the treadmill. I found a blog the other day called The Lean Green Bean which had tons of workouts. Definitely worth checking out! Anyways, after browsing some of the supersets she had, I came upon an arm and abs one that I actually thought I would finish. Sometimes when it comes to supersets, I find that I get bored or get to a move that I hate and just stop. This one I ended up pushing through and I was definitely feeling it a few hours later.

As for the rest of the afternoon, I will be spending it catching up on some school work and getting chores done around the apartment. I am hoping that between those two, the days between now and November 20th when I go home for Thanksgiving will fly by! Fingers crossed! Have an amazing Thursday!

No Time For Being Lazy

6 Oct

…unless it’s this morning and you’re me. I have had the absolute slowest start this morning and getting myself out of bed this morning was on the verge of impossible. I ended up working on some homework last night until almost 1:30 AM without even realizing it so this morning was not fun. I think I’ve been gradually waking myself up over the past two hours, starting with reading a book in bed for the majority of that time. Then I finally managed to make it out of bed and get a mug of tea going.

Must. Wake. Up.

As for the plan today, I am hoping (fingers crossed!) to get back into the gym today for at least a little while. My nose is still stuffed up but I am getting so antsy that I can’t wait another week to get to the UREC. I’m planning on doing the Saturday circuit here from Back On Pointe and just going at my own pace. No need to rush through it while I’m still recovering! By the time that is done, it’ll be time for the LSU/Florida game which is going to be a nail-biter with the way that we’ve been playing recently. Let’s just hope we don’t have as many penalties as last week! Last year when we played Florida, our punter ended up scoring which was EPIC but because he was celebrating before he got to the endzone, we sadly lost the points. It’s still one of my favorite highlights from last year though….

I hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing Saturday! Enjoy it while you can!

Turn the Beat Around

30 Sep

Is it just me or does everyone else get incredibly tired of their running must after a few runs? Lately I’ve been finding myself skipping through a majority of the songs on my playlists and getting distracted from my run. I should also add that I am the queen of making mental notes and forgetting them seconds later. For example, if I am in the car and I hear a song that I’d love to add to my workout list, I make a mental note. The problem is that the song never makes it to my playlist…until now! I found an app for iPhone called Shazam that I’ve been using lately which listens to the song that is playing and saves it to a list so that you can download it later. Genius right?! Although I’m still working on adding some more songs to my lists, here is a list of my favorite workout songs now:

Another neat site that I use a lot to find new workout music is called jog.fm. I can’t exactly remember where I heard about the site but it has turned out to be an amazing find. The site allows you to enter your pace for either you runs, bike rides and walks and returns a very extensive list of songs that have the same bpm as you run/walk/bike. Nifty right? You can also listen to the songs on Spotify if you have it installed on your computer as opposed to typing them all into Youtube which can be a pain.

Well now that you have plenty of new sources for music, I hope you all add some new songs to your playlists and get going! As for me, I’ll be taking the next few days off because of a sneak attack from a cold but no fear! I’ll be back out on the trails before you know it. Have a great Sunday night and a wonderful Monday tomorrow!!

Do you have any favorite workout songs that you add to every list? Any suggestions that I should add to my lists? Leave them in the comments!

Race Wish List

27 Sep

Happy Thursday everyone! In the past few days as I’ve been trying to find some more fitness blogs that I enjoy reading, I’ve also found that in the coming year, there are a ton of races that have caught my eye and that I’m considering running. Even though I’ve been running since high school, I have never run any sort of race outside of track meets and would love to finally cross that off my bucket list so without further ado, here is my wish list!

1. Zooma Women’s Race Series in Austin – March 23, 2013

Not only is this a race that is largely focused on female runners but Zooma has turned the entire event into a fun girls weekend with shopping, yoga and wine tastings (along with many other things!). In addition to the Austin race, the group is hosting others along the east coast and even one in Michigan. The thing that caught my eye (aside from the fun of a girls weekend) was the fact that this race is in “Austin Hill Country” and if you ask me, I need to see that for myself. Being from the North, I’m use to running hills and seeing mountains but from what I’ve heard, Texas is pretty void of any elevation. Another perk of this race is that they have both a 5K and a half marathon depending on your skill level. I would hope that by the time this race comes around I’ll be ready for a half marathon but as of right now, I’ll be sticking with the 5K.

2. Tough Mudder Houston – October 2013

Who doesn’t love an enormous challenge? As if running a race isn’t hard enough, make it three to four times longer than a 5K and add military style obstacles that were designed by the British Special Ops. Did I spark your interest yet? The Tough Mudder isn’t just a challenging race though as many of the entrance fees are donated to the Wounded Warrior Project which helps to support wounded veterans…a worthy cause if you ask me and definitely worth the entrance fee! Plus, who can complain about crossing the finish line and having a beer handed to you, a band already playing and the party raging. Finally, the race series promotes helping one another which is amazing when you realize that running, for a lot of people (myself included), is often a solo activity. Definitely adding it to my list of races to complete in the future!

3. Color Run – Austin 2013

It’s only a 5K but at the end of the race, you look like you’ve been attacked with a box of crayons and chances are, you’ll have the biggest smile on your face. This fun run takes that name to a whole new level by covering runners in a different color of all natural chalk every time they finish another kilometer of the race. Don’t want to get covered in tons of color? The organizers have solved that problem and created zones where the color is more concentrated so you can pick and choose how colorful you are by the end of the race. Similar to the Tough Mudder, the finish line serves as the entrance to the after party where people can enjoy music, food and compare how much color they managed to pick up during their run. The website says there is only one rule: You have to wear mostly white and have fun!

Color Explosion!

and last but not least….

4. The Boston Marathon – April 15, 2013

Growing up in New England, the Boston Marathon is a huge deal. Race day is affectionately referred to as Marathon Monday and the entire state has the day off. Schools are closed and for the most part, everyone is in and around Boston lining the race course. I, unfortunately, have never had the chance to see the actual race in person but I have seen it plenty of times on TV and have seen a majority of the course which is far from easy. Miles seven through fourteen pass through Newton, MA and are strictly hills including the notorious Heartbreak Hill which I grew up hearing my mom talk about. There is nothing more exciting than watching the runners turn down Boylston Street for the final stretch and seeing that first person cross the finish line. It absolutely warms my heart and can some years even make me cry. I love seeing other people’s hard work and dedication pay off. I can only hope that there will be a day in the future when I will get to cross that famous finish line after running 26.2 miles from Hopkington, although this race maybe a long way off.

Now that you’ve seen my race wish list, I want to hear about yours! What races in the next year (or more) are you looking forward to being a part of! Leave me a comment with your answers!
